A College Alternative for Homeschoolers
I was compensated for my time to write this post. All opinions are my own and I was not required to write a positive review.
I’ve talked before about the entrepreneurial spirit of homeschoolers and the way we tend to be out-of-the-box thinkers by nature. As my own daughter is in the middle of her freshman year of high school right now, I watch with pride as she develops useful skills and utilizes her natural talents and interests to form her own business endeavors. She is years ahead of the curve on that front because of homeschooling. I’m glad to see her benefit in ways I didn’t even dream of at that age. Because of that, I’m always on the lookout for resources that will help her along that path. I was just introduced to Praxis and I couldn’t be happier to have found it!
What is Praxis?
First, watch this video:
Apprenticeships used to be the norm before colleges became money-making machines. (Money-making for the colleges, that is, not the students who acquired mountains of debt.) Praxis uses the apprenticeship model to help young people launch their careers, including becoming entrepreneurs if they choose.
It’s not that homeschoolers can’t get into college — it’s that they look at the big picture and decide that there are sometimes better alternatives for their particular plans and career path. An apprenticeship might prove more useful in getting a job than a 4-year degree, for instance. Praxis offers a choice that doesn’t involve years of debt just to obtain a degree that won’t help them anyway.
This homeschooled student gives three good reasons why he’s choosing Praxis over the traditional college route:
Diana is a graduate of the Praxis program. I can relate to her story. When I was in high school, I begged my parents to sign the papers so I could quit, get my GED, and get on with my life. I always knew I wanted to be a writer and I didn’t see any reason to delay. They didn’t agree so I had to stay in high school, but it’s a different world today. Homeschooling just wasn’t well-known or well-accepted then. At the time, being an internet entrepreneur wasn’t an option either, but I did participate in the post-secondary program and completed my entire first year of college for free, full-time my senior year of high school. Where there is a will, there is a way, right?
Apply to Praxis, a College Alternative
You can apply right now if Praxis sounds like the solution you need. Even if you’re not ready for it right now, I would bet you know some others (maybe other homeschoolers?) who would be interested. Do them a favor and pass on this info!
The Praxis motto is “Break the Mold.” Isn’t that what we’re already doing as homeschoolers?
