Homeschooling with Workbooks
Homeschooling with workbooks can be a very straightforward way to learn. If you plan to use workbooks in your homeschool, you’ll want to know the advantages and disadvantages.
Many parents appreciate the ease and portability of using workbooks, while kids also get to work independently. Both parents and children can appreciate the clear lessons offered by workbooks. It’s easy for parents to assign a certain number of pages to do and kids know exactly what to expect from their learning time.
Kids can get a sense of accomplishment by completing a workbook. It’s also a great way to show progress in what they’ve learned. This can be important for homeschool record-keeping.
Sometimes homeschooling with workbooks can be a fun way to learn and review in the early years. Even though we prefer living books to textbooks, each of my daughters have gone through phases when they really enjoyed using workbooks.
I like to do what works in our homeschool rather than adhering strictly to any certain homeschooling method, so I invested in some workbooks that I knew would be good quality and fun for them to use.
Can you homeschool with just workbooks?
You might be surprised to learn that it is possible to homeschool with just workbooks alone. Many workbooks offer complete grade level core curriculum, such as Comprehensive Curriculum of Basic Skills Workbook (8 book series). We have used these in our own homeschool.
If workbooks are working for you and your children are progressing with their basic skills, there is no reason you can’t use workbooks for your curriculum, especially in the early years. This workbook approach would work best for preschool through sixth grade.
Homeschooling with Workbooks
We take a delight-directed, literature-rich approach to homeschooling in our family. However, I’ve found that there is a time and a place to use workbooks as well. They work well for review, practicing basic skills, early learning concepts, and even for the times you’re traveling and the kids need something to work on in the car. Workbooks can also prove helpful in a homeschool portfolio to show progress.
Another advantage of workbooks is the small cost. If you’re just beginning homeschooling or transitioning from public school or have a tight budget, workbooks are a great way to fill in the gaps.
Many times in the early learning years, I’ve found that kids enjoy completing workbooks and “doing school” in a way that gives them a sense of accomplishment. If you’re using the workbox method or your kids need some extra practice on basic skills, I recommend taking a look at these workbooks for your homeschool for kindergarten through third grade.
There are a lot of workbooks here, so remember to pin this post for reference later!
