5 Frugal Family Fun Ideas
Spending time with your family is important, but finding things to do that don’t burn a hole in your pocket can be a challenge. When it comes to setting a budget, it is important to stick to that budget even with family activities. So, here are 5 activities you can do while sticking to your budget!
Frugal Family Fun Ideas
Go to the Museum on Free Days:
During the summer months and many times during winter months, museums in various cities offer free days for families. This usually only happens once a month so you have to keep an eye out on your local museums. If you want to know ahead of time, give your local museum a call and ask about free or reduced days for kids.
Look into Zoo Passes:
Kids of all ages love seeing all kinds of animals. The great thing about zoos is that many of them offer zoo passes. This means you pay a one-time family fee for a full season of family fun. The other great thing about zoo passes is that if you buy them at one zoo, you can use them for discounts at sister zoos.
Look into your local zoos for family zoo passes and sister zoos.
Keep an Eye Out for Craft Days:
Home improvement stores, craft stores, toy stores, and even the library love to offer craft events free or low cost. We can usually find one craft day a week between different places. If your family loves crafts, get in on the fun at local shops. From bird houses and tool boxes to Father’s Day and Mother’s Day crafts, your community is the perfect place to find family fun.
Have Family Game Night:
There are tons, and I mean tons of games that your family can choose from. You can make your own games, buy family fun games, or use the games you already have. Spend the night making good food, playing games, and laughing with each other. Nothing makes family fun better than some good old board games. We love Sorry!, Trouble, Clue, Uno, Scrabble, Chutes and Ladders, and so many others. {Read this post to see some more of our favorites.}
Enjoy a Nature Walk:
Nature walks are a great way to spend family time — they’re free, they’re educational, and they encourage family conversations. You can do this in your own backyard or take a short drive to a nearby area like a park. You can read some more ideas about getting started with nature studies in this post.
When you have a family budget, it’s always important to find fun things to do within that budget. Keep these tips in mind to have frugal family fun!

Looking for frugal family activities is definitely on my mind! One day we took the family to the lake for a hike. The kids spent over an hour learning how to skip rocks just like Dad. It was such a great memory to remind myself that it doesn’t take a bunch of money to create a moment that everyone remembers forever! 🙂
So true! I never did get the hang of skipping rocks very well, but my husband is good at it. He has taught our daughters, too. The simple times are often the best times, aren’t they?
