Woodland Birds Christmas Ornament
Need a super simple Christmas ornament to make with the kids this year? This Woodland Birds Christmas ornament is a fun one to try.
Christmas Ornaments that Kids Can Make
We love to make Christmas ornaments! It’s a fun tradition and a great way to spend the days leading up to the holiday season in a relaxed and creative way. Most of the ornaments on our Christmas tree are handmade and I love it that way. There’s a lot of love in those Christmas ornaments, even if they aren’t fancy.
Many of the ornaments can be made by children independently, depending on age and skill level. I would recommend helping them with these in particular since they involve hot glue. Even I occasionally burn myself with the glue gun so I wouldn’t allow little ones to do it. Now that my girls are getting older (sob), they can handle the glue gun carefully. I still enjoy the fun memories we make while making ornaments so I do these right along with them anyway.
I did find this great all-in-one mini glue gun set for kids. It includes the glue sticks (both plain and glitter!), carrying case, silicon mat, and finger protectors. It’s a super great deal!
Now technically you can even use these ornaments as part of a birds unit study if you want to make this an educational activity. As I’ve mentioned many times, my youngest daughter loves birds. She’s a budding ornithologist so that’s what initially gave me the idea to use birds for these ornaments. You really could use any type of embellishment you like, but backyard birds are a good match for our winter bird watching and feeding.
If you want to mix it up and add variety to another type of unit study, get embellishments that complement your child’s interests. How fun it would be to make a homemade ornament that represents something they love, like dinosaurs, trains, or horses. Delight-directed learning and Christmas fun all in one!
Christmas Ornament Supplies
I was able to find all of the supplies affordably on Amazon and I have provided the links below:

Thanks for the awesome Christmas ornament project – we will have to try that at my house this year. Only difference is we have a large area of English Ivy growing near us so we will pick and form our own mini wreaths. I use the ivy to make dream catchers currently.
Another Christmas ornament idea we have done (don’t have pictures as they are still stored) are taking old burned out incandescent light bulbs and soldering a 1/2 paper clip on the base to make a hanger (could do similar with jute… twine by wrapping around the threads and glueing). Then use paints, glue/glitter, ribbons… to decorate into Christmas tree ornaments.
Tip: if you use glue/glitter allow ornaments to hang and dry well then, in a well ventilated area, spray with a clear (Ktylon) finish – prevents glitter from falling off over time.
Warning: use only incandescent bulbs, maybe LEDs, and stay away from fluorescent ones.
Merry Christmas.
Love the idea of upcycling the light bulbs into Christmas ornaments. Thanks for sharing. So nice that you have ivy to make your own wreaths, too. Great idea!
