Top 10 Must-Read Classic Books for Kids

Since I’m blogging about Classic Books for Girls everyday this week, it got me to thinking about my favorite books overall from my childhood.  I thought I would share a list of books that I think are essential reading for kids in the kindergarten through eighth grade reading range, whether as read-alouds as a family or by themselves.  These are not necessarily in any order.  It was hard to choose just ten!  I’m not including the five that I’m specifically blogging about this week since I didn’t want to be redundant.

  1. Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White
  2. The Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett
  3. The Trumpet of the Swan by E.B. White
  4. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis
  5. The Boxcar Children by Gertrude Chandler Warner
  6. Sarah, Plain and Tall by Patricia MacLachlan
  7. The Courage of Sarah Noble by Alice Dalgliesh
  8. Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm by Kate Douglas Wiggin
  9. Hitty, Her First One Hundred Years by Rachel Field
  10. Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren

I think I’m going to have to do a part two of this list in the future!  I’d like to do a list for older readers, too.  So many books, so little time . . .

  1. The Boxcar Children is my all time favorite book! My daughter loved it too. I have Sarah Plain and Tall, but we haven’t read it yet.

  2. Love the list. I find myself writing about books a lot lately, so much that I think I’m going to have to break down and create a new blog label of “books” . . . I’ve just been filing all those posts under my homeschool category. Anyhoo . . . I loved The Boxcar Children books as a kid. I want to start reading them with my E . . . I think she could probably handle the text, but she’s a little overwhelmed by books without much white space still. Maybe in a year or so. I can’t remember when I read them, second grade maybe? older? hmm . . .

Thank you for taking the time to comment!
