The Science of Snow: Winter Unit Study with Free Printables

What happens when the whole outdoors becomes your science laboratory? You get to study something “cool” like the science of snow! This was definitely a delight-directed learning adventure for us.

Winter is our favorite season. We love the snow! So of course we had to make a study of it. What better way to not only enjoy the beauty of the snow, but the amazing way it is designed? That’s the science of snow!

Snow Under the Microscope

Snowflakes are an awesome testimony to God’s beautiful design. A man from Vermont, nicknamed Snowflake Bentley (1865-1931), spent a lifetime studying snowflakes. With limited photographic and microscopic technology, he was able to capture these hexagonal designs on film. He painstakingly photographed them without destroying them before they melted.

No Two Snowflakes are Alike!

We took the time to catch snowflakes and look at them on our gloves before they melted, though we weren’t able to get them under the microscope. Just seeing all the different designs was amazing and it provided another opportunity to talk about God’s unique and purposeful design in creation. If He cares so much about the design of snowflakes, how much more does He care for us?

The Winter Wonders unit study from Amanda Bennett is one of my favorite unit studies. I’ve used it with all three of my daughters over the years. They love learning about winter weather, winter birds, migration, hibernation, and all things winter in this interactive unit study with lapbook.

I made a few notebooking pages to go along with our science of snow study. You can use them as part of your nature journal, your daily notebook, journaling time, or however you choose. These kinds of things are always nice in a portfolio if you need to do those in your state.
