7 Favorite Caldecott Honor Books Your Kids Will Love

Answers in Genesis

Caldecott Honor Books are chosen every year by the American Library Association to honor children’s picture books. The first award was given in 1938. I’ve chosen 7 of our favorites from the list that we have especially enjoyed throughout the years.

It’s always difficult to narrow down our list of favorite books to choose just one, or even a handful for that matter. One of the fun ways we find new favorites is by going through the lists from the American Library Association.

Favorite Caldecott Honor Books

Snowflake Bentley by Jacqueline Briggs Martin (1999)

We used this book as part of our Science of Snow study. My girls love the true story of the man who first studied and took pictures of snowflakes under a microscope.

Officer Buckle and Gloria by Peggy Rathmann (1996)

If you have a child who enjoys animal stories and humor, this book is a great choice. We first read this when my oldest daughter was just 4. She’s 15 now so it’s been on our bookshelf for years. My youngest daughter (7) still loves to read this book. Gloria is a police dog who travels with Officer Buckle to schools to teach students about safety. It might not sound like a funny topic, but it’s done in a way that will get kids laughing and help them learn.

The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg (1986)

What would a family Christmas celebration be without reading The Polar Express? I know many aren’t too fond of the movie, but the book is a whole different experience.

The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats (1963)

Another classic winter choice. I remember reading this when I was little so it’s fun to share with my kids.

Time of Wonder by Robert McCloskey (1958)

Robert McCloskey is a favorite author for us. Time of Wonder is just that — a chance to appreciate the little details that kids notice and that we often overlook as adults. It’s just a lovely look at the simple things, like collecting seashells and digging your toes in the sand.

Make Way for Ducklings by Robert McCloskey (1942)

I remember reading this for the first time when I was in kindergarten, just like Blueberries for Sal. This classic story of duck families is not to be missed!

Madeline’s Rescue by Ludwig Bemelmans (1954)

My girls have loved all of the Madeline books. Madeline shows us that hope and perseverance are important qualities and can be contagious when shared with others.

These are the Caldecott Honor books that we have read over and over again. They are virtually guaranteed to leave a lasting impression on your kids and ignite a love of reading.

Have you read any of these books with your kids? What is your Caldecott Honor favorite?
