Build Reading and Math Skills with a Multisensory Approach
We take a relaxed, delight-directed approach to learning in our homeschool, which means lots of hands-on activities and a personalized learning path for each of my daughters. Reading Eggs and Mathseeds online have both worked very well for my youngest daughter over the past two years. Each page goes along with the Reading Eggs or Reading Eggspress online lessons, so Books K – 1 cover the lessons in Reading Eggs and Books 2 – 5 cover Reading Eggspress. The same set up applies for the Math workbooks.

Reading and Math Skills Practice with Reading Eggs and Mathseeds
Reading Eggs is an online program that introduces children to the world of reading through interactive stories and games with fun characters. With activities for ages 3-7, Reading Eggs helps to spark a love for reading with everything from alphabet recognition to phonics to early reader stories. Puzzles, games, and songs are used to capture a child’s attention and make the reading experience multisensory. Reading Eggspress is geared for older children (7-13) to encourage fluent reading. Reading Eggs Junior covers beginning reading skills for ages 2-4. Mathseeds covers math skills for ages 3-9. Reading Eggspress offers reporting so that parents can keep track of what the children are learning and how well they’re doing. Lessons cover Year 2 to Year 6 reading curriculum in an engaging online world that children enjoy. Stories cover both fact and fiction for a broad range of reading material. A map aids in navigation throughout Reading Eggs World. After the completion of each map, there is a quiz. The results are sent to parents in an email. Children can earn online game rewards by completing lessons.
The online content and the workbooks together make a very thorough reading and math program to build essential skills.
Why It Works
- My daughter enjoys workbooks, believe it or not. I like the fact that she’s getting extra practice and reinforcement through different means, both online and offline.
- The workbooks are portable. In fact, we took two of them with us last week when we went to a doctor’s appointment. It made the waiting time go faster and she was learning at the same time.
- I think most kids like some type of online learning and Reading Eggs/Mathseeds definitely fits in with the “fun learning” category.
- Her learning style works best with multisensory resources like Reading Eggs and Mathseeds. Adding the companion workbooks means the learning continues offline, but it dovetails perfectly with her online lessons. This extra reinforcement really helps!
- The workbooks aren’t the flimsy dollar store variety. They are sturdy, colorful, and the pages are thick enough to withstand erasures.
- The workbooks provide a way for her to practice her handwriting, which uses a different part of the brain than typing. This helps her makes more connections in her learning activities.
- The learning is incentivized both online and in the workbooks. There is a certificate of completion at the end of each workbook.
- As the parent, I like the assessment info. I don’t hold much stock with grade levels, but I do like to see that my daughter is making progress in her reading and math skills. I also like to know where she might have some weaker areas that need shored up and where she is strongest in her skills. This is useful information for homeschooling parents.
