Learn to R.E.A.D. with Multisensory Lessons and Activities

Learning to read is one of the biggest milestones for our kids. As homeschool parents, we get the privilege of being there for that breakthrough moment when our child says, “Look, I can read it!” It’s one of my favorite things about the early years of homeschooling. My girls all love books and we enjoy read-alouds together, but there’s just something about being able to read a book independently that really cements that love of reading.

Sometimes, as much as we love books, learning to read isn’t easy.

My youngest (7) has been a struggling reader — until we started using Learn to R.E.A.D. curriculum from The Crafty Classroom! She has begun to thrive because she really looks forward to doing her lessons with this program. It’s a downloadable 36-week curriculum designed to provide multisensory lessons, activities, and games to help with the skills necessary for successful reading.

Alongside reading lots of books together, we have been using these lessons and activities almost daily. She has gained confidence with the “quick wins” she gets with these activities. Because it’s multisensory, she gets to use her creative skills to color, cut, and paste as well. She loves that aspect! One of her favorite activities is the Phonics Bingo game. It has helped her to sound out words, something she struggled with before.

Learn to R.E.A.D.

Learn to R.E.A.D. stands for Ready, Eager, Able, and Determined. I’m a big proponent of not pushing children too early to read so you won’t drain the joy of reading from them. This curriculum backs that up by emphasizing the idea that there’s no rush to read. We want to gain mastery and enjoyment, not just meet numbers on a standardized chart. Remember, that’s one of the advantages of homeschooling!

In addition to Learn to R.E.A.D., there is a companion review set of printable early readers that help kids practice phonics and sight words. These are fun little books that target rhyming words and CVC word families. It’s easy to print what you need when you need it. My daughter likes to add some of her own personality to them by coloring them and putting a sticker on the cover when she finishes reading it to show that she’s mastered that book.
