Joyful Summer Learning Ideas

Summer is the perfect time of year to help children discover just how much fun learning can be! These ideas are perfect for a mom-run summer camp, year-round homeschool, and if you just need a few days’ worth of activities.

#1 Learn Through Movement

Summer is a wonderful time to really delve into active learning! From swimming to hiking to learning a new sport, the possibilites for improving gross motor development are endless.

Active play teaches more than just gross motor skills. Through sports and active play children develop social skills and learn about the importance of practice, perseverance, and determination.

#2 Get Out in Nature

There is so much to learn from the great outdoors! Go on a nature walk and see how many examples of nature’s camouflage you can find.

If you are able, take a road trip away from your neighborhood so that your children can experience a new array of plants an animals. You might also use Google Earth to travel the world from the comfort of your own home.

#3 Summer Science Experiments

Summer can be a fun time for a weather unit. You may be surprised at how much you can learn, even if the main events are how hot and cold it gets in a 24 hour period.

Don’t forget that reading is an excellent way to learn science, too! Set up a science shelf in a central area of your home. You’ll soon find your children teaching themselves all sorts of fascinating scientific facts.

#4 Summer Writing

Read some summer books, and then work on some of your own writing. Summer is a fun time for fan fiction writing, where you take a character from a story that you recently read and write a spin off story of your own. You can write a story where you develop a minor character, you can continue the existing plot, or you can rewrite the story with your own original ending.

Summer is also perfect for learning to write about your own life. There are many benefits of journaling for kids, from building self-awareness to developing self-expression to recording important family memories forever. Journaling can be as complicated or as simple as you like. Buy the kids a pretty notebook and hand them a pen. Or, print off custom journal templates for them to complete and store in a binder. You can also buy expensive journals to hopefully treasure for years to come.

#5 Joyful Math

Summer is an excellent opportunity for children to learn that math can be fun. These math games and activities are a great place to start. Don’t forget to watch for ways to learn math in your everyday life, from grocery shopping to baking to crafting.

Measure your kids at the beginning and end of summer. How much did they grow – in inches and then in centimeters? Add some math to those hikes – how many butterflies did you see? How about trees? Can you graph different types of insects or trees?
