Overcoming Homeschool Math Phobia
Homeschool math is a common source of phobia when it comes to teaching our children. Take heart, it can be overcome with the right resources!
If you’ve been homeschooling for more than a day, you’ll recognize some familiar names in the homeschool world. Teaching Textbooks is one of those familiar names. I’ve heard great things about them for years, so I was very glad to finally have a chance to review their homeschool math curriculum: Teaching Textbooks 3.0 online math curriculum. We have been using Grade 3, Grade 5, and Algebra 2.
Online Math Curriculum
Did you know Teaching Textbooks has an online option now? It’s Teaching Textbooks 3.0 and it’s a very convenient choice when you have multiple children of a wide age range. Everything can be managed through one parent dashboard so it’s all centrally located and easily accessible. This means you can look over all the curriculum, lessons, and gradebook for each student in one place. You can change passwords if necessary, look at quizzes, and track progress.
Teaching Textbooks 3.0 even offers a free trial of the first 15 lessons with no time limit and no credit card required. You may try any or all of the levels.
I highly recommend taking the free placement test to choose a level. Teaching Textbooks is not strictly set to grade levels. For example, Grade 3 would be for an advanced 2nd grader or an average 3rd grader. Courses begin at Grade 3 up through Grade 7, then Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, and Pre-Calculus.
Overcoming Homeschool Math Phobia
After all these years of homeschooling, I have learned (the hard way) that the homeschool math phobia is mine, not my daughters’. They all do well with math. They don’t have the same hang-ups that I picked up in public school, thankfully. Although math isn’t their favorite subject, they do it without (too much) complaint.
However, I have never felt comfortable teaching math. I just don’t enjoy it. We take a relaxed, delight-directed approach to most things, using living books rather than set curricula. I think it’s a very solid and natural way to learn. That being said, I also want to make sure my daughters have a sound foundation in math. Since they plan to be entrepreneurs, they’ll need basic math skills to run their businesses.
In addition to that, my oldest daughter plans to go into web design and development. She’s doing coding, scripting, and 3D design. That’s beyond my scope, so we’ve sought out online resources to help her. Teaching Textbooks 3.0 Algebra 2 is a great choice for us. She can do her lessons independently online and I can feel confident that I’m providing the education she needs.
Benefits of Teaching Textbooks 3.0 Homeschool Math
Convenience
Teaching Textbooks 3.0 homeschool math is convenient because it’s online, has levels for the whole family, and can even be used on a mobile phone or tablet. It’s easy for the homeschool mom because it doesn’t require teaching math. The lectures are included with the lessons so it’s just log in and go. (You can print the lessons if you choose and want a hard copy to include in a homeschool portfolio.)
Affordable
Teaching Textbooks 3.0 offers large family discounts. You can find all the information about that here:
Thorough
The lessons cover all the basics, including math vocabulary, problem solving, and all grade level standards. I found it to be very thorough and straightforward for each level that we used.
Just the facts
There aren’t a lot of distracting bells and whistles with Teaching Textbooks 3.0. There’s just enough personalization and gamefication to keep it from being boring, but not so much that kids forget the objective. My daughters liked to choose their own learning “buddy,” which is a character avatar to cheer them on through the lessons. Students can also choose their background, like a desktop wallpaper. This can be changed as often as they like.
Reassuring
This is where the overcoming math phobia comes in. Since I don’t have to do the teaching, my own math anxiety is out of the way. I found it very reassuring that even my youngest daughter was actually working above her age level in math. I had some worries that we hadn’t covered enough up till now, but Grade 3 ended up being a simple review for her. The same thing with Grade 5 for my middle daughter. I was happy to see this!
If you want to overcome homeschool math phobia — for both teacher and students — Teaching Textbooks 3.0 online math might be just what you need. It provides a traditional approach to math basics that will thoroughly cover what your students need to know in a convenient format.
