Our CTCMath Review
Let’s get real about math for a minute, shall we? There are some who love math and approach it with enthusiasm. Then there are others for whom math is a four-letter word. Well, technically math is a four-letter word, but I think you know what I mean.
We fall into the four-letter word camp around here.
It’s my fault. Chalk this one up to the homeschool mom guilt category. Words are my thing and I’ve never had a natural bend toward math. I’m afraid I’ve passed that on to my daughters unintentionally. The first step to solving a problem is admitting there is a problem, so I decided to get some help. A math intervention, if you will.
I realized that it’s not too late for my daughters to excel at math, and — dare I hope? — not dread it. I figured if I took myself out of the equation, the problem could be solved.
CTCMath has entered the picture and helped us immensely toward not dreading math time.
How CTCMath Works
Through the parent login, I can assign math lessons to each of my daughters. I can pick and choose what I want them to do and even set due dates. I can choose from any of the available lessons, regardless of grade level, so if their skills don’t necessarily match up in any of the areas, it’s a non-issue.
Through the student login, they can see their assignments and easily get to work without a lot of wasted time fumbling around looking for the right thing. Navigation is simple.
Each lesson begins with the example teaching video first. If your student wants to skip that, they can. For instance if they’re just reviewing a concept you’ve covered before. If not, they can get a good example of what they’ll be covering and how to complete the lessons. This makes using CTCMath hands-off for the homeschool mom if need be and your child is ready for independent work. However, I’m always nearby when my girls are working on lessons so I’m available for questions.

Kids get “medals” as they make progress and finish lessons. It shows their score as an incentive to keep going. After certain skill sections are completed, they receive a certificate that you can print out. It’s automatically emailed to parents. If you have kids who don’t love math, this can be a big deal. It’s also a nice thing to add to their homeschool portfolios when you need to show progress for state requirements.
My daughter loves the confetti animation when she gets 100% on a lesson! She also customized the colors on the background, making it her favorite color.
There are some math games included at the bottom of the lesson pages, too. These can also be used as incentives to finish assignments. My daughters’ favorite is the rocket launch game with times tables.
The Best Parts of Online Math with CTC
There are a lot of great benefits to using CTCMath for both the students and the teachers. Here are just a few of our highlights:
The instructor speaks in a very low key, calm voice. When you have kids with special needs like autism and/or ADHD, this can be very helpful and reassuring for them. {He has an Australian accent, by the way.}
Online math is patient, forgiving, and never has a bad day. When things are going well, it encourages students with certificates and progress medals. When things aren’t going well, there’s no rush and students can repeat whatever they need, as many times as necessary. They can work at their own pace.
It doesn’t box students into one grade level. You can go between grades, vary lessons by length, and find the appropriate skill level. Parents have the ability to hide the year level on assignments so kids will never know the difference if they aren’t working “at grade level.”
Parents can have task reports automatically emailed to them. This shows what assignments the kids have done and their results.
For me personally, I love it that all of my daughters can use this online math, each to their own ability. I can set tasks individually for each of them. I don’t have to keep track of three different math programs so it’s all very consistent for us.
CTCMath is multisensory because it has video, audio, and students can do the problems on-screen or use their own paper and pencil. PDF lessons can be printed out, too. It suits many different learning styles.
By using CTCMath, I get to assign the math without actually having to teach the math. This is awesome because CTCMath is neutral toward math problems. It doesn’t have my prejudices. It also doesn’t sigh heavily during math time. *ahem*
Do we all magically love math time now? Well, not quite. However, we have found that we can tap into the power of online math to make it less onerous. That is a huge plus in my book!
