Why We Need to Count Our Blessings {Even When It’s Hard}
It’s the most wonderful time of the year, right? Sometimes as busy moms it can also be the most tiring time of the year. We’re busy, that’s true. But are we busy doing what really and truly matters? Ouch, that can be convicting. Believe me, I’m preaching to myself. Amidst the busyness and flurry of activities, do we remember to count our blessings?
I’m not talking about trite platitudes either. That doesn’t help. I know firsthand that the struggle is real. It’s hard to have a thankful heart when our to-do list never ends and we always feel like we’re behind. It just plays right into a spirit of grumbling and complaining that seems to come so much easier than a spirit of praise.
I discovered something recently in my own situation that changed my perspective a little. It’s nearly de rigueur as a mom to complain about the amount of laundry that needs to be done, right? It’s a never-ending battle for us. How do you tackle Mt. Washmore? Well, a few weeks ago our washing machine quit working. My husband thought he could fix it easily with a new belt. The washer is 17+ years old, mind you. It turned out to be a bigger project than anticipated. At the moment, we still don’t have a working washer. Suddenly all of that laundry I’d been dreading and complaining about having to do couldn’t get done at all. It made me instantly thankful for the time when I actually had a washer — which led me to ponder the state of my heart in regard to gratitude in general.
It’s been a rough year full of health problems and financial setbacks. It has felt like many days were an uphill battle. Still, there are many more reasons to be thankful.
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. ~ Philippians 4:8
As moms, we set the tone in our homes. We are the examples for our children, which means we need to take the lead in growing a heart of gratitude. Our thoughts are to be fixed on blessings, not struggles.
I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.
~ Philippians 4:12-13
These are the times that try our souls. With all the bad news in the world — all the negativity — it’s hard to focus on the good.
