Learning about Marine Life Unit Study Ideas
A marine life unit study can be a fun elementary science exploration topic. A great place to begin your study is with a living book on the topic, then branch out from there as your children ask questions.
Marine Life Unit Study Resources
I recommend the picture book All Fish Faces: Photos & Fun Facts about Tropical Reef Fish by Tam Warner Minton, as a good way to start a marine life unit study.
We recently had the opportunity to review All Fish Faces and my daughters were interested from the moment it arrived. We always love getting new books, so they were happy to see this in the mail. They both sat down together and began to look through the photos and talk about the fish.
All Fish Faces: Photos & Fun Facts about Tropical Reef Fish
All Fish Faces: Photos & Fun Facts about Tropical Reef Fish is a softcover picture book with brilliant full-color closeup photos of many different types of tropical reef fish. It almost feels like taking an underwater adventure from the comfort of your couch!
The pages are glossy and colorful. The book is divided into sections by type of fish and each is well-labeled so you know each name and type. The sections have some general facts about the fish, such as where they live, camoflage/defense, and what they eat.
The book begins with an introduction of six ways fish differ from mammals. Kids will learn vocabulary words like toxin (via pufferfish!), vertebrates, invertebrates, symbiotic relationships, warm blooded, cold blooded, and more just from reading the descriptions of the fish throughout the book.
Author Tam Warner Minton is a travel writer, blogger, photographer, and scuba diving enthusiast. She has traveled across all seven continents and her passion for the oceans and marine life is evident in this book. She cares about conservation and saving the oceans and ocean life through educating future generations. She donates 10% of the profits from the book to the Marine Megafauna Foundation.
