1. Allium
You can’t look past these tall pops of purple! Allium are actually part of the onion family, but they smell nothing like onions! These tall, purple puff flowers are easily recognizable and can add some instant whimsy to your garden. Plus, the bright color will attract butterflies and give them a peaceful place to rest. Plant them from bulbs for best results.
2. Bee Balm
Bee balm isn’t just good for attracting bumble bees, it attracts butterflies too. This plant comes in all sorts of colors, and it is pretty low maintenance. It is also a perennial, so once you plant it, you can count on it coming back year after year. It makes great ground cover or can dress up flower borders nicely.
3. Butterfly Bush
You can’t have a butterfly garden without a butterfly bush. It is no wonder this plant attracts butterflies considering its name! Lilacs are some of my most favorite flowers because I love the smell! We have light purple lilacs in our backyard.

Mint is for more than just your lemonade. Grow mint and attract butterflies to your yard too. Mint makes great ground cover (although be careful, it can take over quickly) and does well in containers too. Another benefit is repelling rodents like mice who try to find their way into your house.
