Homemade Clay DIY Christmas Ornaments
DIY Christmas ornaments can be a fun family tradition!
One of our traditions is to make a new kind of Christmas ornament every year. We’ve made all kinds — salt dough, felt, wooden, beaded — you name it. Here is one of our favorites to make from homemade clay. Easy, inexpensive, and the kids love it!
Homemade Clay DIY Christmas Ornaments
Ingredients-
1 cup baking soda
1/2 cup cornstarch
1 tablespoon cream of tartar
3/4 cup water
You will also need-
Mixing bowl
Mixing spoon
Cookie cutters
Drinking straw
Rolling pin
Parchment paper
An oven
Directions-
1. Preheat oven to 175 degrees.
2. In a small mixing bowl combine all your ingredients and mix well.
3. Once your ingredients are well mixed, pour your mixture into a small pot.
4. Mix/cook on medium heat, stirring constantly until your mixture forms a ball of dough (takes 2-3 minutes).
5. Place your dough onto a piece of parchment paper to cool, with a wet rag on top.
6. Once your dough is cool, roll it out to 1/4″ thick (if the edges seem a little dry, get your hands wet and smooth the edges out).
7. Use your cookie cutters to cut out shapes and place them onto a parchment paper lined baking pan.
8. Use the top of your straw to cutout little circles from the tops of your shapes.
9. Bake for 1 hour in a 175 degree oven, flipping the ornaments over half way through.
10. Let your Christmas ornaments cool on a wire rack for about 30 minutes.
11. String your ornaments with a little decorative string and they are ready to hang on your Christmas tree.
I’ve found that these homemade clay ornaments are easier to mold and less brittle than salt dough. You can also paint them or add glitter or other embellishments, too!
