Young Whit and the Traitor’s Treasure {Book Review}

Answers in Genesis

Adventures in Odyssey has been a family favorite for years now, ever since we first started listening to the audio stories in the car while running errands when my oldest daughter was just four years old. She’s sixteen now and we’ve carried on the tradition with her younger sisters. We still love the stories!

Embracing Destiny disclosure

If you’re familiar with Adventures in Odyssey, you know the name John Avery Whittaker. He’s been the central character throughout the decades. Now you can get to know him when he was growing up in the new book series Young Whit. We got to read the first book in the series, Young Whit and the Traitor’s Treasure by Phil Lollar and Dave Arnold.

The book is geared for ages 10 and up. It’s a nice hard cover with a map of Whit’s hometown at the front and back so you can really visualize the setting. This is an adventure story with a good moral lesson, but it also has mystery and suspense. The book immediately starts with an intriguing bit of drama and draws the reader in, but I won’t give any spoilers here.

It’s not always easy to find good books for our kids. Ones that aren’t just pure fluff or that go against our beliefs entirely. This book is good for the whole family. I read it and enjoyed it myself.

It’s nice to combine our love of reading with our love of Adventures in Odyssey. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good story with a positive message. You can even enter to win a copy of Young Whit and the Traitor’s Treasure at the end of this post!

About the Young Whit Book Series

This Odyssey book series explores the history of the much-loved character John Avery Whittaker. The series introduces newcomers to the larger world of Odyssey. For readers who are already Odyssey-philes, the novels provide the history of the franchise’s most important character.

Whit and his family (father, Harold; stepmother, Fiona; half-sister, Charlie) have just moved to Provenance, NC, in the middle of the Great Depression. Harold will be teaching at nearby Duke University. Not-quite-10-year-old Johnny soon makes a friend in Emmy, who lives across the street and joins him in his adventures. At his new school, he encounters a bully who makes his life miserable, and he makes a new friend in Huck, the custodian. Both of them play key roles in the mysteries and action.

The central mystery in book 1 involves Confederate gold missing since the end of the Civil War and the question of whether Johnny’s ancestor was the coward and thief who stole it, as everyone believes.
