With four females in our household who love good-smelling soap and lotion, it can be a challenge to find some that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg and that won’t irritate our sensitive skin. That’s why I decided to make my own! With all-natural, great-smelling ingredients, this can be a perfect gift for anyone on your Christmas list — or a nice treat for yourself!

DIY Lavender Vanilla Whipped Body Butter

There are only three ingredients, making this a super simple and healthy recipe for skin care. None of those artificial chemicals that can irritate your skin, or worse yet, be carcinogenic!

Ingredients

1 cup coconut oil
1 Tablespoon vanilla extract or essential oil
3-4 drops lavender essential oil

You’ll also need a jar or container with a lid.

Directions

Place all ingredients in a small saucepan and melt over low heat.

Transfer to a mixing bowl and place in the freezer along with your mixing whisk for 15 minutes. You want the oil to be chilled for it to whip properly.

lavanilla mix

Once chilled, use an electric mixer on medium high for 5-7 minutes until light and fluffy. Store in a jar with a lid.

Note: In warm conditions, the body butter can melt back into an oil. If this happens, place in the freezer to chill, then whip it back up again.

I used Lavender and Vanilla, making the relaxing and yummy scent of Lavanilla. Of course, you can substitute different essential oils and choose your own scent! I love how simple this project is, yet it produces great results. It’s so healthy for your skin, too!

If you’re giving it as a gift, you can use a fancier jar or embellish it with ribbons or bling. You can even create a personalized label to make it extra special:

I think these little chalkboard labels are cute and they come with the liquid chalk marker.

  1. I am making this now! I am a bit of a hippie so I am using patchouli, sweet orange, and grapefruit as my scents :). Hoping this pans out

    1. Ooh, that sounds good! I hope it turned out well for you. I don’t do complicated and I got it to work, so I think it should work for anyone. lol Enjoy! Let me know how it went if you have a chance. 🙂

  2. hello i sell essential oils and with putting the essential oil in a pan and heating it takes the aroma out of the oil. I would say add the essential oil when your whipping the coconut oil.

    1. Wow, good tip. I hadn’t noticed the loss of aroma, but I will definitely try it the way you suggest the next time I make it. Thanks for sharing!

    1. That’s a good question. I’ve always used it up so quickly that it wasn’t an issue, but it does start to separate after a few weeks. You can refrigerate it to keep it longer. As long as it’s in a sealed container it should be okay. Hope that helps!

    2. Vanilla extract does contain water. Which ANYTHING where there water there is bacteria. My personal recipe uses only oils, if choose add water, or any kind of liquid containing such, I use optiphen plus, or Gerbamen plus. All natural preservative. For your product to last a lifetime, then just stick to 100%oils. Hope this helps! 🙂

      1. Thank you for this comment! It makes sense and I agree. I only use the essential oils now when I make it. I’ve never really had a problem with storage because we use it so fast, but if I did plan on storing it this would be really important to remember. I just like the oils better for texture and consistency, too. 🙂

  3. Just made this one!! Super!! Never ever again I’m gonna buy body butter from the shop. It’s so smooth and not greasy at all! I used it after homemade body scrub and my skin is so so soft. Love it! really easy to make also! So thanks! 🙂

    1. That’s great! So glad to hear it. I liked it for the same reasons — really simple and not greasy!

Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. That makes my day. 🙂

  4. Love these…I used extract and it seems to have turned things brown…maybe I’ll add a smidge of purple food coloring ? Enough to tiny the cream but not stain the skin…lol

    1. Yes, that might work. I’d be worried about using too much though, LOL. Mine didn’t seem brown when I made it — just a sort of ivory color. Maybe it was the type of vanilla I used. I have to admit the kind I used wasn’t 100% pure vanilla, so maybe it was more watery and less brown. 😉 Also, if you use the vanilla essential oil instead, it shouldn’t have the coloring/staining problem.

    1. Sorry to hear that. I’ve never used alimony oil so I’m not sure if it would work or not. Does it have the same basic consistency as coconut oil (fairly solid)? If you try, let us know if it works! Good luck!

  5. Made this today and used it after my shower. Nice smell. A little oily at first, but absorbs quickly. This was my first attempt at body butter. Thanks for the recipe.

  6. I am obsessed with this recipe! The lotion is great and it is SO easy to make. I have made several large batches of this for gifts (always reserving a jar for myself, of course!) and I’m getting ready to experiment with a smaller batch for myself using lavender, lemon, and frankincense oils for their skin health benefits. Hopefully the three will smell nice together! *fingers crossed*

    1. Thanks so much for the nice comment! I’m so glad you love the recipe. It really is easy because I don’t do complicated stuff! LOL I hope the new scents work well for you. It sounds good. Stop by and let me know how it goes. 🙂

  7. Made this today as gifts for my sister’s baby shower. Recipe was easy enough. I kept it I’m the freezer a bit too long. I softened in the microwave and it made the process go that much faster. I used vanilla extract and it turned my batch brown. I had to add a lot of food coloring to cover it. I’d recommend skipping it or using essential oil.

    1. Glad it worked for you! I agree, the essential oil works much better. I’ve made a few more batches since I first wrote the post and discovered that, too. I’ll edit the post to make a note of that. Thanks for your comment!

    1. I haven’t fully tested it for longevity because we use it so fast! I have been able to keep it for 2 weeks without any problems, though. It can be stored in the fridge during hot weather so it doesn’t “melt” or separate. I hope this helps! Thanks for stopping by.

  8. Is the coconut oil supposed to melt down completely with the oils when on the stove? mine did and its in the freezer now but I just wanted to make sure I made this the right way. I wanted to surprise my mom and aunts with this for mothers day.

  9. If you are using vanilla essential oil, do you need a tablespoon of the oil? That seems like a bit much to go with 3-4 drops of lavender. Thanks.

    1. You can adjust to your liking. I’m to the point where I add about 5-6 drops of vanilla essential oil (or a about a teaspoon) to the 3-4 drops of lavender. The lavender is just a stronger scent and I prefer a little more vanilla myself. I don’t quite usually use a full tablespoon of the vanilla oil anymore because I’m not as concerned with the fragrance as the consistency of the body butter. It also depends on the brand of essential oil as I’ve noticed some are stronger than others. 🙂 I hope this helps!
