Using Online Reading Games to Build Skills and Confidence
If I had a nickel for every time I talked about how much we love to read in our family, I’d be able to buy even more books with all that change. Loving books and read-aloud time doesn’t always translate into strong reading skills in beginning readers, however. Sometimes even when the motivation is there and reading is enjoyable, it doesn’t come easily. Sometimes you need some multisensory activities and reading games to help build those early reading skills.

Using Online Reading Games to Build Skills
We’ve had the opportunity to try out Reading Eggs to work on building reading skills with my youngest daughter (7). Before I go into details, I have to say that Reading Eggs has been a huge success in our homeschool. She loves it and it has worked! Her spelling and reading have greatly improved in the time she’s been using it. She also specifically asks to “play” Reading Eggs. Anything that improves skills while making it enjoyable makes us both happy. I’ve been really pleased to watch her make so much progress in such a fun way for her.
What is Reading Eggs?
Reading Eggs is the multi-award winning online reading program for children aged 3–13.
With hundreds of reading lessons, thousands of interactive activities, and over 2500 e-books, the program provides a safe online learning environment where children build essential early literacy skills while having fun.
Reading Eggs is designed to progress at the child’s pace, with an understanding that every child learns differently. With an easy to use parent dashboard, the program allows parents to track their child’s progress and access detailed reports on how many lessons they have completed, books they have read, their estimated reading age, and quiz scores.
Reading Eggs has also recently launched Reading Eggs Junior, a brand new online learning program where toddlers aged 2-4 take their first steps in learning to read.
You can place your child at the right level or they can take a short test to get the right placement. ReadingEggspress is for older children and encourages reading with online books geared to their age group and ability level. Reading Eggs has basic reading skills that increase in difficulty as the child progresses through the levels. MathSeeds is another great math-based part of the site to encourage math skills with games.
How We Use Reading Eggs to Build Confidence
My daughter has a competitive streak in her and she loves the gamification of reading skills. She takes it as a personal challenge to progress through the reading map and hatch those reading eggs. It’s a real celebration for her. This is so different than my two older daughters who never really needed those kind of incentives. Isn’t that always the way with parenting and homeschooling? Just when you think you have things figured out, your kids throw you a curve and you realize you have to change your whole approach. Surprise, surprise — not all children learn in the same way — even siblings!
