Rainbow Art Paper Towel Activity
Art and science come together in a fascinating way when we explore the world of colorful experiments. One such delightful activity is the Rainbow Art Paper Towel Activity. With just a few simple materials, you can create stunning visual effects and learn about capillary action and color blending.
This Rainbow Art Paper Towel Activity is a simple STEAM experiment that kids will love! You can see how to make this Rainbow Art in the step by step instructions and photos included in this post. Do it just for fun or extend the learning with the ideas below!

Rainbow Art Experiment
This rainbow art activity combines STEAM with a fun and easy project for kids. While you’ll want to supervise little ones so things don’t become too messy, it’s a fun hands-on activity that’s simple to make. You probably already have the supplies you need at home!

Supplies You’ll Need for Rainbow Paper Towel Art:
- markers (this is my favorite set of washable Crayolas)
- paper towels
- small bowl of water
- dropper
- plastic mat (these come in really handy for many types of projects from playdough to painting!)
- white cardstock paper (3 sheets)
Directions to make Rainbow Paper Towel Art:
Place the paper towel on a piece of cardstock paper.
Draw a rainbow on the paper towel with the markers.

Discard the cardstock paper (some of the marker will have bled onto the page.)
Place a plastic mat on the table. Then, place a new sheet of cardstock paper under the paper towel on top of the mat. The mat will protect your workspace from getting wet.
Drop water drops onto the rainbow one at a time, and watch the colors spread. The colors will also bleed onto the cardstock paper.

Once finished, place a new piece of cardstock on top of the paper towel and press down gently. This will help the bottom piece of cardstock absorb more of the color from the rainbow.
Remove the top piece of cardstock paper. Allow the paper towel to dry slightly, then remove the paper towel to see the colorful rainbow left on the bottom page!

At the end of this experiment, you can have up to 3 different pieces of art work – the bottom page, the top page, and the paper towel itself!

Display! Check out how the artwork looks when placed in a sunny window. Your kids will be so proud of what they’ve made while learning about watercolor techniques and seeing color transfer in action.
Now cozy up with some of these rainbow books for kids and you’re all set!
