Putting Together a Homeschool Language Arts Curriculum
As I always say, one of the best advantages of homeschooling is being able to teach the way your kids learn. Choosing individualized resources yields great results when it comes to encouraging the joy of learning!
Note: I was compensated for my time in writing this post, but the opinions are 100% my own. I was not required to post a positive review.
Homeschooling requires outside of the box thinking and that definitely extends to the curriculum we choose. There are so many options out there that it can be hard to narrow it down, especially when it comes to essentials like learning to read and write. I’ve found language arts curriculum at Homeschool Buyers Club that has worked well in our homeschool, as well as being budget-friendly.
Homeschool Buyers Co-op has an award-winning selection of language arts products, including curriculum for phonics, reading, writing, vocabulary, spelling and grammar.
Our Favorite Homeschool Language Arts Curriculum
We’ve tried our share of language arts curriculum over the years, but these are a few favorite resources that have been tried and true for us!
Night Zookeeper:
My daughters are constantly creating – artwork of all kinds, short stories, picture books, digital art, crafts, songs, and whatever other creative urge strikes them. It’s amazing to see what they come up with on their own.
Sometimes we need to give our kids different tools for creativity. Resources that will give them some direction in their learning, but not discourage their curiosity and creativity.
Night Zookeeper is one of those great resources that helps children build skills in their own unique, creative ways.
Night Zookeeper takes the stress out of teaching language arts by making it genuinely fun for children ages 6-12. Through games, interactive lessons, and tutor feedback, Night Zookeeper boosts children’s reading, writing, spelling, grammar, and vocabulary skills.
Grammar:
Fix It! Grammar is from a well-known name in homeschool language arts — Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW). In just 15 minutes a day, your students (grades 3-12) can learn the grammar concepts they need for successful writing. It’s all done through fun stories that they read and correct. Each lesson includes four sections:
- Learn It (explore the concept)
- Fix It (find and fix the errors in the passage)
- Discuss It (practical application)
- Copy It (rewrite the correct passage into a notebook)

Literature:
Progeny Press offers literature guides from a Christian perspective. The Progeny Press mission statement outlines their commitment:
not to bring you only ‘safe’ fiction, but to teach literature that is well-written and that will help students develop and refine how they deal with man’s philosophies in relation to God’s word. Progeny Press also examines literary terminology and technique in good, cultural literature to equip students to understand the craft of writing and to enhance their joy of reading.
The literature guides are available in both print and pdf formats from Homeschool Buyers Club. There are 100+ titles across the age ranges of K-12. We’ve personally used the Anne of Green Gables, Treasure Island, and The Courage of Sarah Noble guides. You can check out all of the titles and read more details here.
Learn to Read/Phonics:
You probably recognize the name Explode the Code as a phonics-based learn to read program. Did you know there is an online version? You can cover books 1-8 in the series with multisensory online lessons! It’s ideal for new or struggling readers in the K-4 grade range.
My daughters also enjoyed using Reading Eggs online. The characters are fun and engaging. If your kids look forward to online game time, this could be a good alternative to “gameify” reading for them. You can save 25% at Homeschool Buyers Club.
Writing:
My girls love to write, as do I. We also love resources that embrace that inner spark of creativity and nurture it. Brave Writer does that for your youngest writers all the way through high school! There are so many options in this enriching language arts program.
You can save 40% on the regular price by purchasing through Homeschool Buyers Club.
I also highly recommend trying the free reading resources at Reading Eggs. They offer free printables (no strings attached) as well as a 30-day free trial.
The Homeschool Buyers Club
Remember that if you’re looking for Language Arts curriculum you can find savings up to 93% (compared to regular price outside of Homeschool Buyers Club). These low prices make it possible to try different programs without worrying about huge expenses.
Putting It All Together
Don’t be afraid to mix and match resources to find what works best for each of your children. There is no one cookie cutter answer for everyone. Trust your instincts and remember to enjoy the learning journey! When you relax, your children will, too.
