Lessons in Cheerful Giving at Christmas Time

If you’re looking for a simple way to introduce children to the concept of Biblical giving, Why I Give, an activity book by Corine Hyman, Ph.D., is an excellent place to start.  It is a companion to her hardcover children’s book Why We Give Gifts at Christmas Time.  I was blessed to review both with my daughters.

The ebook, Why I Give, is a fun and educational resource to use along with the book or on its own.  Since it is available as an instant download, it is ideal for starting immediately with some meaningful activities to enrich your Christmas time plans.  It includes activities like crossword puzzles, word finds, and coloring pages.  Each coloring page has a Bible verse about giving so children are reminded of the true meaning of giving at Christmas.

Why I Give activity book

Our favorite features of the Why I Give activity book are the fun projects to make and give as gifts.  Examples include bird feeders and no-sew fleece blankets.  My oldest daughter (almost 12 at the time) really loved making a blanket.  We love to make homemade gifts and Why I Give is packed with good ideas.  There are also journal pages with prompts and Bible verses so kids can either write or draw a picture.  My girls represent a fairly wide range of ages and skill levels (including special needs), yet they were each able to participate in some way in the activities.  They looked forward to doing this each day in our Circle Time.  I like to have this kind of resource on hand at Christmas time when we take a lighter approach to homeschooling and most of what we do centers around Christmas/Advent.

The book wraps up with some printable Bible verse cards that focus on “giving” scriptures.  Corine suggests printing them on cardstock and playing a game of memory or go fish with them.  I think that’s a good idea for memory work and will try that with my girls.

I also think it’s neat that Why I Give is illustrated by Corine’s 13-year-old niece, Lyrique Kennedy.  She is responsible for the coloring pages throughout the activity book.

At 64 pages, Why I Give is a thorough and fun way to implement hands-on lessons in cheerful giving.

Why We Give Gifts at Christmas Time children's book

This book is perfect for children ages 3-8 to learn what the Bible has to say about cheerful giving and why we celebrate Jesus’ birthday by giving gifts to others. Each page introduces a character who explains why he or she gives gifts, along with a Bible verse for illustration. The book is colorfully illustrated by Julie Bryant. A diversity of ages and races are represented in the characters, each with happy, smiling faces. It is such a sweet and pleasant book, gently sharing the message clearly with little ones in mind. My girls (6 & 4) truly enjoy the book and often say, “Read it again!” as soon as we finish.

  1. I do give homemade gifts for Christmas. Usually something personalized since I monogram. I also like to sew up special things for the kids.

Thanks for the chance to win

  2. Looks like a great book! I know, better to have the focus stay where it needs to be when we’re giving 🙂
