Free Classics List by Grade Level
Looking for classic book recommendations for your children? This free classics list by grade level is a good place to start.
What is a Classic Book?
Strictly speaking, classic books represent models of excellence or works of enduring cultural relevance and values.
From a reader’s standpoint, these are the books that keep us thinking about the story long after we finished them.
Classic books teach us through story. They ignite our imaginations and build our character. They show us something about humanity, whether for the good or bad.
Charlotte Mason recommended immersing your children in living books as a primary means of gaining knowledge.
But which books should you read and at what age?

About the Classics Reading List
This list is not exhaustive, nor is it meant to be. It is merely a guide to get started when you’re choosing books for your homeschool. Consider it a framework to which you can add other books as you expand your reading horizons.
I recommend that you use your own discretion regarding your child’s reading level and maturity level. There may be rough language and difficult topics in some of the books, especially in the Grades 9-12 range. Use your best judgement based on your child and pre-read the books as you deem necessary. Although I have read all of the books on the list, some were years ago and I can’t remember everything that might be objectionable to every single family. We all must trust our own standards.
Many of the books in the older range include issues like marriage, divorce, crime, prejudice, and other sensitive topics. Be aware of this. I believe these books are worthwhile and can teach important life lessons. Children and young adults can learn compassion, empathy, and perspective through quality literature.
Also be aware that this list does not represent the whole scope of diversity. I have come to realize that my own education was lacking in that area and I’m continuing to learn more about this so I can teach my daughters. You will need to add more diverse literature representing other cultures, religions, and ethnicities as you see fit.
No matter what the reading list, there will always be those who disagree or find something offensive or objectionable about it. I encourage you to create your own lists according to your sensibilities. I’m not here to debate others, but to be helpful to those who are looking for a springboard to build their reading lists.
I hope you find this useful and spend lots of time immersed in great books!

Thank You!! I have been looking for just this list!!!
Thank you!
No problem! Our thanks to Robin for sharing this great resource. So helpful!
Classics, according to Christian, do in fact include mythology and books by the ancient Greek philosophers. We just balance it with a Biblical world view. Great literature that has stood the test of time are most certainly included in our classical studies. Just wanted to clarify that. 🙂 Thanks for the list!
I agree. We also cover those things in our homeschool, balanced with a Biblical worldview.
I just want to say thank you for this list. You saved me hours of searching. Thank you so very much!
You’re welcome! Glad to hear it! Enjoy all those great books. Thanks for stopping by.
