Creative Business Ideas for Teens
Following interests is one of the greatest benefits of homeschooling, in my opinion. My daughters are all creative with an entrepreneurial spirit, which we’ve been able to encourage thanks to homeschooling.
I love to see resources that also encourage these interests, so I was very happy to have the chance to review Teen’s Guide to Making and Selling Upcycled Arts and Crafts: How to Start a Creative Reduce-Reuse-Recycle Side Gig, a new book by James Dillehay.
Starting a Business with Recycled Crafts
James Dillehay combines both sustainability and creative entrepreneurship in his book Teen’s Guide to Making and Selling Upcycled Arts and Crafts. He encourages teens to try their hand at turning reducing-reusing-recycling into a creative business.
In this guide, Dillehay not only showcases the potential of upcycling as a creative outlet but also provides practical insights and strategies for teens to turn their passion for crafting into a profitable venture.
I knew as soon as I read the description that my daughters would benefit from this book. My youngest daughter (14) in particular is planning to start her own Etsy business. She’s in the planning stages now, so this book came at just the right time. She has some ideas for it already, but the book takes teens from the idea stage to planning to launching to managing to scaling the business. This is just what she needs to begin the process with the best chance of success.
Written specifically for teenagers, Dillehay’s writing style is clear, engaging, and free from jargon, making it easy for young readers to grasp the concepts and techniques presented. Each chapter is concise and motivating. He uses checklists to simplify the information into bite-sized, doable tasks.
The book is divided into well-organized chapters, each focusing on different aspects of the upcycling business process. Some of the topics covered are:
- Choosing a name
- Legal requirements
- Accepting payments
- Marketing and promotion
- Pricing
- SEO tips
- Selling on Etsy
- Social media
From setting up an online shop to pricing their products effectively, Dillehay equips teens with the knowledge and skills needed to turn their hobby into a successful business venture.
He also encourages creativity itself, telling teens the benefits of creating something unique and original, rather than just copying what everyone else is doing. I appreciate this message. I also think it’s important in an age when so many teens are anxious and depressed. Giving them something creative of their own to do helps them express their personalities in a positive way at an age when they really need that.
Moreover, Dillehay’s book champions the principles of sustainability and environmental consciousness. By promoting upcycling as a means of repurposing waste materials and reducing our carbon footprint, Dillehay inspires teens to become mindful consumers and advocates for positive change in their communities.
You could use this book as the basis of an elective credit for your teen by designing your own project-based unit study with the Teen’s Guide to Making and Selling Upcycled Arts and Crafts as your “textbook” for the lessons. That’s what I’m doing for my daughter and I’ll include it in her transcript.
Why Teens Should be Creative Entrepreneurs
Here are several reasons why homeschooled teens should be encouraged to be creative and entrepreneurial:
- Freedom to Explore: Homeschooling allows teens to break away from the constraints of a one-size-fits-all curriculum and explore subjects that truly interest them. Whether it’s music, art, coding, or gardening, homeschooling provides the flexibility for teens to dive deep into their passions and develop their skills.
- Fostering Independence: By taking charge of their own education, homeschooled teens learn to be independent thinkers and problem solvers. They develop the confidence to pursue their ideas and take initiative in creating their own opportunities.
- Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills: Entrepreneurship requires the ability to think critically, adapt to change, and solve problems creatively. Homeschooled teens have the opportunity to engage in real-world projects and experiences that foster these skills, whether it’s starting a small business, launching a blog, or participating in community service initiatives.
- Encouraging Innovation: The world is constantly evolving, and innovation drives progress. By encouraging creativity and entrepreneurship, homeschooling empowers teens to think outside the box, challenge the status quo, and come up with innovative solutions to complex problems.
- Preparation for the Future of Work: The traditional job market is changing rapidly, with an increasing emphasis on entrepreneurship, freelancing, and remote work. Homeschooled teens who develop entrepreneurial skills are better prepared to navigate this evolving landscape and create their own opportunities in the future.
- Building Resilience: Entrepreneurship is inherently risky, and failure is often part of the journey. By encouraging teens to take risks, embrace failure, and learn from their mistakes, homeschooling helps build resilience and perseverance—essential qualities for success in any field.
- Empowering Self-Expression: Creativity is a powerful form of self-expression, and homeschooling provides teens with the freedom to express themselves authentically through various mediums. Whether it’s writing, painting, filmmaking, or music, creativity fosters a sense of identity and purpose.
