Bugs: Big & Small God Made them All {Moms of Master Books Review}
I have to admit that anything bug-related is not exactly a popular topic around here. However, my girls were definitely intrigued by the book Bugs: Big & Small God Made Them All by William Zinke that we received to review from Moms of Master Books.
New books are popular around here, even if they have a giant bug on the cover. As usual with Master Books/New Leaf Press, this book is visually appealing. The sturdy hardcover, the glossy pages, and the full-color photos and illustrations draw children into the book and keep them turning the pages. As a homeschool mom, I appreciate the reference quality of the book, knowing it is one we will keep and refer to for years to come. The photographs are terrific, easily equaling anything from National Geographic or similar publication.
The book includes five chapters:
- Amazing Creepy Crawlers
- Jumbo Giants
- Weird & Wonderful
- Bugs in Camo!
- Bizarre and Beautiful
The best part of the book is the way the author relates everything back to God’s design in creation. The connection is clearly communicated with scientific facts that dovetail with God’s amazing design. My girls gained a new appreciation for bugs! ::gasp:: They realize that they are part of God’s creation and have a purpose and function in the balance of things. If you can teach Biblical truth by talking about bugs, you’ve done a good job as a writer in my opinion. 🙂
The main portion of the book covers interesting facts about the bugs, lots of photos, and Bible verses and commentary to link it all together. There are also some sidebar type “Creepy Cool” facts thrown in here and there to share more details. The book answers questions like the following:
- Why did God create such pesky insects?
- In what way are bugs signposts to God’s brilliant creativity?
- What types of butterflies are bigger than some birds?
- What does sin have to do with bugs?
The last few pages of the book include perforated bug cards that you can tear out and use for study. Each card has a photo and name of the bug on the front, then a chart with facts on the back. Facts include scientific name, size, location, diet, trivia, and other interesting tidbits of information.
