Balancing Health, Fitness, and Homeschooling
In some ways, homeschooling is like a remarkable adventure. It’s exciting and fulfilling. You not only get to customize your child’s education but also get to spend quality time with your children.
But, homeschooling comes with its own unique challenges. It places significant demands on our time and energy. Trying to give your hundred percent all the time can cause burnout. Sometimes, when you feel like giving up (all of us do at some point), you need someone who understands and a few words of encouragement.
There are things you can do before you reach the burnout point. And the first thing on that list is self-care. No, self-care in this case is not sheet masks, bubble baths, and spa time (although you should sneak some time for that regularly). Self-care in the form of prioritizing health and fitness is more important for homeschooling moms.
As a homeschooling mom, you probably have a lot on your plate, and giving time and attention to your fitness seems unnecessary and extra. But, you don’t have to take time out specifically. And, prioritizing your fitness is going to make you a better educator. It can actually boost brain functioning, increase mental clarity, and enhance creativity. You’ll also have more energy (you know you need it!).
How to Balance Health, Fitness, and Homeschooling
Curious as to how you can manage it all? Here are some tips for you:
Combining educational and fitness activities: Younger children love action songs, and these provide you an opportunity to move your body along with boosting the memory, motor skills, and vocabulary of your kids. Besides, you’ll also be making fun memories. With older children, there are plenty of ways to combine homeschooling and exercise, such as active learning games, nature walks, and gardening lessons.
Mindful eating habits: Children learn a lot through observation and emulation. They’re always watching you. When you eat mindfully, you serve as a role model, and without any extra effort, you’ll be encouraging the cultivation of healthy eating habits. If it’s difficult for you to find time to do some proper meal planning, turn it into a learning activity. Create meal plans with your children.
Food preparation is also an essential life skill, and you could teach them this skill while getting nutritious meals ready. If your diet is still lacking in some ways, multivitamins can serve as insurance against deficiencies, and help your body function at its best.
Use technology to your advantage: By using technology strategically, you’ll be able to complete both – your homeschooling tasks and fitness goals. Increase the efficiency of your educational activities using apps and online resources. You’ll find that you have more time at hand to pursue your fitness goals.
Wearable fitness devices can help you measure your activity levels and progress. There will be days when your device shows low activity levels, and this will serve as a reminder to you to get up and get moving.
Incorporating activities that boost mental health: By including activities that boost mental health, you’ll be teaching your kids its importance early in life. And what will these activities do for you? They’ll help you be more calm and relaxed. You’ll be able to keep anxiety and depression at bay.
Some activities like yoga have built-in elements of meditation. Hire a yoga instructor, or follow audio/video resources online, along with your kids to restore harmony between mind and body.
Even though you are ‘homeschooling’, it does not mean that you are bound to the house. A trip to another country can refresh your mind, and double up as a lesson in Geography and History.
Wrapping Up:
Combine homeschooling and fitness activities, but also reserve at least 10 minutes a day for yourself. Utilize these few minutes to do anything that you prefer, which will help you manage stress. A few examples include journaling, stretching, and deep breathing.
Remember, you can’t pour from an empty cup. Take care of yourself, to be able to take better care of your children and their educational needs. Homeschooling is not a sprint, it is a marathon. By balancing your health and fitness with homeschooling, you’ll have more success in this journey.
