3D Artwork with the AtmosFlare 3D Pen
Creativity and hands-on projects are key components of our homeschool. I love to find cool tools to encourage my girls to think creatively and try different techniques to express themselves through their artwork. When we heard about the AtmosFlare 3D Pen, we couldn’t wait to try it.
I received this product at no cost for the purpose of review. I was compensated for my time. All opinions are honest, and I was not required to post a positive review.
AtmosFlare 3D Pen
The AtmosFlare 3D Pen kit we received included the following:
- 3D Pen
- 1 Blue Ink Cartridge
- 1 Red Ink Cartridge
- 4 drawing tips and 1 cap
- AA Battery
- Quick Start Guide {basic instruction sheet}
This was everything we needed to get started right away on our first project. My oldest daughter (14) was anxious to try it out. Being the kind who likes to plan ahead, she came up with several different ideas for her first project. She sketched out the ideas on paper first and determined which she thought would be the best fit for the 3D effect. She chose to make a lighthouse.
How the 3D Pen Works
The light is what cures the gel ink, so a steady hand is important while drawing. The technique takes some getting used to with practice. Yes, you can actually draw in mid-air as you work up from the base! We used a piece of black posterboard as our base to draw on.
My daughter caught on right away and has a much steadier hand than I do. She figured out the correct amount of pressure to apply while working at the right speed to create her lighthouse. Admittedly, it’s not a museum piece, but it’s her first attempt and she had a great time making it. That counts for something! The fact that she carefully planned out her design before using the 3D pen allowed her to use engineering and creative thinking skills, which is a big part of why this is a cool tool for homeschooling.
I can see that refill ink cartridges should be kept on hand while making projects with the 3D pen. We went through ours quickly with our practice and then our project. You can purchase extra ink cartridges in a variety of colors from the website.
You can check out a few videos of the pen in action to see how it works.
