Women in History: Amelia Earhart Unit Study
An Amelia Earhart unit study is an important part of learning about women in history. Read on to find out about the resources we used to complete our Amelia Earhart unit study.
I have vivid memories of Big Sis as a toddler with outstretched arms, running through the backyard being an “airplane.” Grinning from ear to ear, she yelled, “I flyin’, Mama!” At one time, she talked about being an astronaut when she grew up, though her plans have changed since then. Lil Sis was also intrigued by the idea of flight. From the time she was a year old, she excitedly pointed at planes flying overhead. By age two, she was loading her Little People into a plastic plane and “flying” it around the room. The fascination with flight seems to begin at an early age, at least in our house.
When I think about the early days of flight, a few names come to mind right away: the Wright Brothers, Charles Lindbergh, and Amelia Earhart. Since I love to take the opportunity to teach my girls about positive female role models and combine that into fun homeschooling lessons, we had to do a study of Amelia Earhart! We even made our own version of this Amelia Earhart pilot costume.
Amelia Earhart Unit Study Recommended Resources
Techie Homeschool Mom has an online unit study all about Amelia Earhart. It includes:
- About Amelia Earhart
- Flying in the 1930s
- Circumnavigation attempt
- Project: Amelia Earhart’s timeline
Online unit studies are great for a no prep, no stress way to learn!
We’ve enjoyed many of the Who Was series of books. Most libraries carry them or you can purchase them inexpensively on Amazon.
We’ve also read many of the Childhood of Famous Americans series. This is a great look into what life was like for Amelia when she was growing up in Kansas and how she first became interested in flying.
Our Favorite Amelia Earhart Unit Study
Amanda Bennett has great unit studies, including this one on Amelia Earhart. Using the elements of lapbooking, Internet resources, and library books, we had a very thorough study covering the following topics:
· Who was Amelia Earhart?
· The Science of Flight
· The People and Places in Amelia’s life (geography, mapping, social studies)
· Lessons to Learn from Amelia (positive character traits)
· Goodies and Gadgets of Flight (including the Wright Brothers)
The study is broken up into five days of material on each topic. Each day has a suggested reading list, divided by day and listed at the beginning of the unit so you can go to the library ahead of time and be totally prepared. There are also so many great clickable links included right in the unit study. Big Sis especially liked the view from a 1929 bi-plane. She couldn’t believe that planes used to look like that! It made her realize how brave Amelia really was, especially at a time when women weren’t encouraged to attempt such things.
