Fun and Free Summer Learning Activities

Answers in Genesis

Summer learning can be fun, especially when you try these free and frugal educational activities!

Even if you are not in classroom mode, learning can take place year round in your homeschool in and out of the home. Summer is no exception. There are many activities that stimulate your child’s brain and imagination that are fun as well and make great educational activities for summer learning.

Disclosure: I was compensated for my time to write this post by Homeschool Buyers Club. All opinions are my own.

It’s likely that we all are hoping to find free or cheap things to do with kids in the summer, including fun and educational activities to work into our summer homeschool schedule. This post has some ideas to help with that!

Educational Activities for Summer Learning

Library Visits

Not only is it a great place to get out of the house, cool off and escape rising summer temps, but you can lose yourself in the books, check out movies, and listen to storytime or join the summer book clubs they often offer. Make it a point to add a challenge to your library visits — encourage your child to read 5 books a week, find a book about a subject they are interested in, etc.

Nature Study/Walks

Every time you step out into your own backyard, visit the local park, or make a trip to a state park you can open up your child’s world for learning. Learn about local wildlife, foliage, weather, bugs, and more. Tuck a field guide into your backpack the next time you head out and make it an even richer learning experience. Read more in these post about connecting your child with nature, taking nature walks, and doing nature study.

Field Trips

Field trips can take place just about anywhere from your favorite local zoo to the newspaper office. Not only can a local day trip be an educational experience but it is fun as well. Who knows —  it may lead to a future career or at least a hobby. Read about how to make a field trip to the aquarium engaging and educational, including free virtual visits!

Apps

Sometimes you just have to avoid the heat and that means hiding away in the house with the air conditioner on full blast. This is the perfect time to break out the tablets that you put a time limit on and take advantage of the fun and educational aspect they offer.

Some of our favorites include Reading Eggs, Nessy, and Code Avengers. You can get a free trial of any of those three (plus many more options) from Homeschool Buyers Club this summer.

Board Games

If you don’t already have one, summer is a great time to institute a family game night. Even fun games like Monopoly, Scrabble, and Yahtzee open up the door to all kinds of learning. You can find some ideas for math games in this post.

Science Experiments

I don’t think many kids would turn down the experience of watching things blow up, bubble over, or change form. Find some fun experiments like the Mentos and Diet Coke geyser or Ice Excavating. Fun and learning can go hand in hand, even in the summer! {Check out this post about making your own volcano, too. We do this outside during the summer every year.}

Sidewalk Chalk

Instead of boring old summer review in a workbook, practice math, spelling, geography, or art with sidewalk chalk. Set out some specific challenges for your child like calling out spelling words or math problems for them to solve.

Unit Studies

A simple summer unit study can be a great way to pursue interest-led learning that you might not get to during the usual school schedule. You can take a relaxed, delight-directed approach to learning during the summer and enjoy a fun unit study that your kids will love because they can choose the topic that interests them most!

Any of these activities can break the monotony of routine and set a more relaxed tone for your summer homeschooling.
