Science with History from Berean Builders
When it comes to choosing a science curriculum for homeschooling, finding one that is both engaging and thorough can be a challenge. We don’t want something we have to slog through just to get it done without any real life application. We want to cover the required scientific concepts, but also inspire a genuine interest in the subject. In our case, we also prefer using living books. It’s a tall order.
I’m glad to share that we found something new that meets those parameters!
Science in the Scientific Revolution by Berean Builders accomplishes this and more. This curriculum, aimed at elementary-aged students, offers a unique approach by blending historical context with scientific exploration.
Science in the Scientific Revolution Curriculum Overview
Science in the Scientific Revolution is the third book in a series by Dr. Jay Wile, known for his ability to make complex scientific concepts accessible to young learners. The series is designed for students in kindergarten through sixth grade, with adaptations available for older students as well. This particular volume focuses on the period between 1543 and the late 1600s, a time marked by significant advancements in science.
The curriculum covers the major scientific discoveries of this era, including those in astronomy, anatomy, and physics. Each lesson is centered around a specific scientist or discovery, allowing students to see how scientific thought developed over time. This historical approach not only helps students understand the concepts but also places them in the context of their time, showing how each discovery built on previous knowledge.
Hands-On Learning
One of our favorite features of Science in the Scientific Revolution is its emphasis on hands-on learning. Each lesson is paired with an experiment or activity that reinforces the scientific concept being taught. This approach is highly effective for younger students, who often learn best through doing rather than just reading or listening. The experiments are designed to be simple enough for elementary students to complete with minimal supervision, yet they are also challenging enough to keep them engaged.
For example, when studying Galileo’s work with pendulums, students can build their own pendulums to see firsthand how length affects the period of a swing. This type of experiential learning helps solidify the concepts in a way that traditional textbook learning might not.
At the front of the book, there is a list of supplies needed for each and every experiment in the lessons so you can be prepared ahead of time. The supplies are mostly common household items, which makes it easier.
Integration of Faith and Science
Science in the Scientific Revolution is written from a Christian perspective, as you would expect from Berean Builders. The curriculum emphasizes that many of the great scientists of the past were motivated by their desire to understand God’s creation. This perspective can be particularly appealing to Christian homeschool families who want a science curriculum that aligns with their beliefs.
Throughout the lessons, Dr. Wile discusses how these early scientists viewed their work as a way to glorify God. This integration of faith and science helps students see that the two are not mutually exclusive, and it encourages them to view their own scientific studies as a form of worship.
Parent-Friendly Design
Another strength of Science in the Scientific Revolution is its parent-friendly design. The curriculum set includes a main textbook and a “Helps & Hints” guide, which provides additional resources and explanations for parents. The guide is particularly useful for those who may not have a strong background in science, as it offers step-by-step instructions for the experiments and additional context for the lessons.
The curriculum is also highly flexible. While it is designed to be completed in a year, parents can easily adjust the pace to fit their child’s needs. Each lesson can be expanded or shortened depending on the student’s interest and understanding of the material. This adjustability makes it suitable for a wide range of learners, from those who may struggle with science to those who are particularly enthusiastic about it.
Each lesson includes a built-in review, as well. It’s divided by age group so that there are age/ability appropriate reviews for youngest, older, and oldest students. I love this kind of flexibility!
There is an index and glossary at the back of the book as well. This makes it quick and easy to look up whatever you might need in the lesson. Difficult words and names have phonetic spellings next to them in the text, making it easier to pronounce the words correctly.
Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving
One of the goals of Science in the Scientific Revolution is to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills in students. By studying the scientific method and the way early scientists approached their work, students learn how to think like scientists. The curriculum encourages them to ask questions, make observations, and draw conclusions based on evidence.
This focus on critical thinking is reinforced through the experiments and activities. Rather than simply following a set of instructions, students are often asked to make predictions, test their hypotheses, and analyze their results. This type of inquiry-based learning helps students develop a deeper understanding of the scientific process and prepares them for more advanced science courses in the future.
