10 Reasons to Love Lapbooking

I’ve talked about our delight-directed learning style before, including this guide to why it works for us and how it can work for you, too. Today I thought I’d focus on one of the things that my daughters have really enjoyed — lapbooking. It works great in our eclectic method of homeschooling, providing a way for us to delve more deeply into books and topics that are particularly interesting.  It’s nice to have a way to display everything we’ve learned in a creative way, too. I’d heard about lapbooking for a while before we tried to do our own. I couldn’t quite visualize what the finished product would be, or even what the point was, until we actually completed one. We made our first lapbook in the summer of 2009, just a month before Baby Girl was born. Our read-aloud at the time was Mr. Popper’s Penguins. Big Sis liked the story so much and had developed an interest in penguins so I decided it would be a good place to start. I had been exploring the ideas at Homeschool Share, which is an invaluable free resource for lapbooking. Using their templates and ideas, we created a lapbook based on Mr. Popper’s Penguins.  You can read that post and see the pictures here.

Big Sis loved the idea of making her own mini-books and artwork to go along with it.  She colored, cut, folded, and pasted her way through penguin facts, reading comprehension questions, maps, and more to complete the project. We were both very pleased with the end results. She learned so much more than if we had simply done the read-aloud and left it at that. We were able to follow the rabbit trails of her interest and she had the feeling of accomplishment with the lapbook. She still remembers most of those facts today simply because she took a very active role in learning while doing the lapbook.  From that first try, I was convinced that lapbooks are a great learning tool.  We have completed lapbooks on literature, math, science, history, geography, Bible, and everything in between.  With lapbooking, the only limit is your imagination!

Lapbooking is a great homeschool tool and visual aid for learning. Here are 10 reasons why lapbooking works for us. What about you? heartandsoulhomeschooling.com

10 Reasons to Love Lapbooking

  1. All ages can be included in the process.
  2. Basic skills like cutting and pasting can be practiced for the little ones.
  3. Deeper study on a subject or book of particular interest (great delight-directed or literature-rich activity)
  4. Allows for artistic creativity.
  5. Makes the lesson more memorable.
  6. Nice keepsake for the future.
  7. Hands-on activity for easily distracted learners.
  8. Visual aid for visual learners.
  9. Can be incorporated into all methods of teaching and learning styles.
  10. Excellent project to include in review portfolios if that is a requirement in your state.
Now that Big Sis is older, we have moved toward more notebooking as well. Lil Sis and Baby Girl have acquired the skills for lapbooking and they enjoy it. We’ve learned a lot about technique and materials since making that first lapbook, but I still have a special fondness for those penguins.  =0)

If you enjoy unit studies and a literature-rich approach to learning as we do, you will most likely enjoy lapbooking as a supplement. All of these are great reasons to love lapbooking for the creative learning value it adds to your homeschooling.

  1. Love lapbooks! Probably more than my kiddos do! LOL It’s lots of fun to combine little, cute books with information and pictures with fun books and interesting videos to make a great lapbook study! Homeschool Share is awesome! Stopping by from the Crew Hop!

  2. Thanks for your kind comment today while visiting my blog. I wanted so badly for my daughter to love lapbooking, but she didn’t at all. We still have a lot of lapbooks around the house and she just reads the text and answers the questions. In the Hands of a Child is one or our favorites.
    Blessings
    Diane

  3. I love how this can me modified for different kids with different styles, applied to any subject! How had I never heard of lapbooking. I will read the rest of the series and send to my wife. Cheers!

Thank you for taking the time to comment!
