Would You Like to Know? Collection {Book Review}
As Christian parents, one of our goals is to pass on our faith to our children beginning at an early age. We want to equip them with a Biblical worldview as they grow so that they can develop critical thinking skills to make wise moral decisions in life. Because of that, choosing quality resources to help answer their questions on age-appropriate levels is important. The Would You Like to Know? Collection from Candle Books is a good start for little ones.
The Would You Like to Know? Collection includes 6 books:
- Would You Like to Know the Story of Christmas?
- Would You Like to Know about God?
- Would You Like to Know the Bible?
- Would You Like to Know Jesus?
- Would You Like to Know the Story of Easter?
- Would You Like to Know How to Pray?
The series is written by Tim Dowley and illustrated by Eira Reeves. Each is presented in simple storybook format with colorful illustrations. They’re ideal for toddler through first grade.
The books are housed in a heavy cardboard sleeve to keep them together. Because they’re small (about 5×6 inches) like a photobook, they could easily fit into a purse or diaper bag to be read on the go. They also make great bed time stories. My early reader (age 7) enjoyed reading them out loud to us as part of her reading lessons.
From the Publisher:
In this new addition to the fantastic Would You Like to Know? series, six little books are featured in one boxed gift set. Each book offers a starting point for young children to explore some of the key points of their faith and gain a greater understanding of Christianity. Each title has accessible illustrations, an inscription page, and notes for parents. A wonderful gift for those getting to know the church.
Would You Like to Know about God? addresses questions like:
- How old is God?
- What does God look like?
It goes on to talk about the attributes of God that we find in the Bible that help us to understand His character and how we can interact with Him. The emphasis is on God’s loving care for us and making a personal connection with Him.
Would You Like to Know about Jesus? teaches that Jesus is our friend. The focus is on love and forgiveness for the wrong things we do. The illustrations help children to understand that if we do something hurtful (the picture shows a child taking another child’s toy), we need to say we’re sorry. It also includes a sample prayer — a child’s version of the sinner’s prayer — to ask forgiveness and to thank Jesus for being our friend.
All of the books focus on the love and forgiveness of God, the importance of knowing Jesus as our friend, and the idea of having a personal relationship with Him to guide us in our lives.
The illustrations show children of many different nationalities/races and the text reinforces the idea that people all over the world are loved by God and welcome in His family.
We all know that children have lots of questions. It’s important that we really listen to those questions and answer them. The Would You Like to Know? Collection helps us to do that in an engaging way.
