Are you a veteran homeschool mom (or dad)?

Have you had a tremendous amount of homeschooling success? Have you raised off-the-chart kids who constantly turn heads and elicit an endless stream of compliments in your direction?

Well I have great news for you. You probably now have, in your possession, a vast set of highly marketable skills!

How to Become a Homeschool Consultant

That’s right. All those years “out of the job market”, unbeknownst to you, you weren’t just sowing the seeds of your brood’s future success, but also of your own.

By now, maybe you have spent 15-20 years mastering the art of individualized instruction and navigating the open landscape of homeschooling groups and co-ops. With your eyes closed you can put your finger on the best books, curricula, and resources for every academic and non-academic subject imaginable. You instinctively know when to slow down, speed up, or change learning approaches.

The 10,000 hour rule (see Outliers or Peak) for “mastery” requires 3 hours of deliberate practice for a decade to be invoked. BUT you’ve been at this homeschooling thing for 14 hours a day for over a decade!

So you may in fact be a world-class expert.

And guess what…

Currently the demand for private homeschooling and homeschool coaches/consultants is exploding.

That means that now that your kids have flown the coop, your free time, your expertise, and needs of the marketplace are intersecting. Thank God, again.

In fact, there are already a lot of people doing it under the radar.

Last week I met a young man, aged 28, who was “privately homeschooling” one student, 40 hours per week, at $150 per hour in Manhattan. Do the math. It annualizes to $300,000 per year!

Obviously he doesn’t have 20 years of in-the-trenches expertise, like some of y’all. And obviously you may not be able to command NYC-esque prices in your neck of the woods. Nevertheless I’m sure it got your attention, and may even piqued your curiosity enough to consider moving to the Big Apple. LOL.

I myself have hired several veteran homeschool moms to privately homeschool the children of my clients. In fact, when I’m coaching ultra-wealthy families (think deca- and centi-millionaire$), my top recommendation is that they hire a local veteran homeschool mom to work with them and their kids. In other words, I consider these supermoms to be the very best teachers on Earth. I’m certainly not recommending “certified” teachers from Harvard or Phd clowns. The best teachers are fluent in individualized instruction, not flowery language, powerpoint lectures, and classroom management techniques (gimmicks?).

All Too Farfetched?

Okay. I know it seems daunting – as any new, outside-the-comfort zone endeavor necessarily does. You might even feel “tired” of homeschooling so the prospect of more kids to teach reading or math to might sound like nothing at all you’d be interested in.

Well I can assure you that homeschooling as a professional is a lot easier! You get to go home when your time is up. You don’t have to be a paranoid disciplinarian who frets over every act of misconduct. You won’t be distracted and taunted by un-made beds and the scowls of dirty dishes in the “classroom”. Oh yeah, and you can help a family out while being sufficiently compensated for your time and expertise!

The hard part of any business is the “selling”, of course. How will you advertise your services? How will you find suitable clients?

Now “marketing” is a pretty big subject in and of itself. In fact I believe it should be part of any child’s ideal curriculum. While I can’t go into marketing in this limited space, I want to recommend the singular resource that opened my eyes, blew my mind, and turned me from a homeschool dad and homeschool blogger….into a well-compensated homeschool consultant.

The book is – The Prosperous Coach.

Essentially, the book is about life and business coaching. What really shocked me was the $50,000-$100,000 (or more!) people would pay coaches for “an hour per week on the phone, for 6 months or 1 year”. And what do they get for paying such high fees?

Massive transformation or results.

The book was screaming at me. Duh, what possible transformation out there is bigger than educating a child, on a customized track, outside-the-system???

Those lightbulbs beaming in my head led me to hang up a sign and start trying to actively sell my services as a homeschooling coach.

Only a year later, the clients started coming!

Isn’t it amazing how a book can change the course of a person’s life?

I strongly encourage anyone looking to become a consultant to read that book for a starting point.

Importantly, it will get you over the mental hurdle that prevents you from asking for significant amounts of money. Because if you don’t passionately believe in homeschooling and what it can do for their family….this lack of confidence will undermine your pitch.
