Economics for High School from Mr. D Math
Economics. That’s not usually a topic that inspires an enthusiastic response from teens. Let’s be honest, it’s not exactly an exciting topic for most adults either. However, when we’re talking about the online self-paced Economics for High School course from Mr. D Math, that’s a different story.
Mr. D Math courses have a way of making learning more interesting, interactive, and dare I say, delightful. Yes, even math and economics. Why is that?
I think the secret is this: an enthusiastic teacher creates an enthusiastic student. Mr. D and the other teachers on the site are enthusiastic about their subjects; thereby turning “dull” topics into interesting explorations of ideas.
I’m speaking from experience because we’ve taken several of Mr. D Math’s online courses. The latest being Economics for High School, a self-paced course for teens to learn useful information about the way the economy works and how it affects them in real life.
Economics for High School
Economics for High School is a new self-paced course taught by Kelli Sandefur, one of the teachers at Mr. D Math. It includes 16 lessons on not just economics in general, but important aspects of personal economics that will better prepare teens for real life issues. Practical life application is something that is often overlooked in many economics courses or curriculum, so I was very glad to see it included here.
Lessons include:
- What is economics and free enterprise?
- Supply vs. Demand
- Opening a bank account
- Reconciling and keeping bank records
- Credit scores
- Identity theft
- Calculating interest
- Types of jobs and job applications
- Job benefit packages, paychecks, minimum wage, unemployment, taxes
- Budgeting and future planning
- Buying a car
- Insurance
- Philanthropy
- And more!
This self-paced class for high school students fulfills the Economics Class Credit (1/2) required for high school. It is based on a semester schedule, but is flexible enough to be completed on your own time table.
The lessons start with an introduction to economics, providing a solid foundation on the topic to begin. Lessons are organized into sections that teach, reinforce, and test students on the concepts of economics.
This is one of the most comprehensive yet easy to understand economics courses I have ever seen for teens.
How We Use Economics for High School
Mr. D Math courses can be accessed on a computer, tablet, or mobile phone as long as you have a browser and an internet connection. This is a great feature for families on the go.
My daughter likes to do her lessons on the Kindle Fire tablet. We can also cast the videos to the TV with our Amazon Fire Stick so she can watch them on the big screen. This way I can also listen in on her lessons and we can have discussions as she goes along.
As a mom of daughters, I was glad to see that the Gender Pay Gap is addressed in Lesson 10. This isn’t always included in other economics courses. I want my daughters to be prepared to deal with this unpleasant reality when looking for a job.
As of right now, my daughters each plan to be entrepreneurs, but I know that can change as time goes on. Even as CEO’s of their own businesses, they will encounter the prejudices of lower pay for women and I don’t want them to undervalue their talents and work. This is all part of personal economics.
This is my daughter’s (age 14) reaction to Economics for High School:
I was afraid it might be boring. It wasn’t really a subject I had thought about before, but the teacher made it interesting in a way I could understand. I liked that it was mostly videos. There were a lot of quizzes along the way and some homework, too. I think the assignments were mostly fun, though. The quizzes helped me to remember the important things so I could review. I know a lot more about economics now than I did before taking the course and how it actually applies to life.
