So you’re homeschooling high school and finally begin to gain a little confidence after your initial worries.
Then you realize that college is staring you in the face faster than you can say, “Holy transcripts, Batman!”
Quickly followed by “How are we going to pay for this?” and “Isn’t there anything we can do to save some time and money?”
Fortunately, there are some good answers to those questions. I recommend checking into Study.com and the help you can find there to get credit through exams to save both time and money.
I wrote about using the resources at Study.com to pass the CLEP exams and how much we appreciated the chance to do that. I’ve just recently learned about the DSST exam options available as well.
What are the DSST exams?
The DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSST) offers over 30 exams that can help you earn real college credit in a fraction of the time for a fraction of the cost compared to traditional colleges and universities. DSST exams are Prior-Learning Assessments (PLAs), meaning they test your subject matter expertise in a particular subject to gauge your level of understanding. Passing these exams proves your mastery and grants real college credit, just as though you had passed the corresponding course at your college or university. This is how the CLEP exams work as well.
These were previously reserved for the military, but they are now open to anyone.
What does Study.com offer?
Study.com’s features include:
- Short, engaging videos
- Supporting text transcripts for videos
- Practice tests
- Personalized study plan
Students can go through the videos and practice tests at their own pace. This can give them the confidence they need to take the tests and pass them for college credit.
Study.com also provides a personalized week by week study schedule to help students plan well and reach their goals.
There are text transcripts of each video that can be used for review, as well as quizzes after each video.

You can take some free practice tests at Study.com and learn more about the DSST exams. I highly recommend looking into it if you’re homeschooling high school right now. Money is often the biggest obstacle in continuing education, but the DSST exams with prep from Study.com can help alleviate that.
You’ve made it this far in your homeschool — don’t give up now! The finish line is in sight.
