Daughters of Destiny { 31 Days of Women in History }
Fate. Chance. Coincidence.
Purpose. Plan. Destiny.
The first group of words indicates an accidental occurrence. Perhaps a lucky break, or in some cases, unlucky break.
The second group of words indicates a higher meaning at work. It is the purposeful plan of a Creator Who cares for His creation.
I believe in the latter. I see the Hand of Providence in the history of humanity. Though men may not esteem women’s contribution throughout history, God does.
So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, 27 for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. ~ Galatians 3:26-28
Women in History
From the well-known to the little known, I want to pay homage to the women in history who have risked their lives, made a difference, fought prejudices, changed the social narrative, defied stereotypes, and even lost their lives for causes larger than any one individual. They have been trailblazers for those who came after them. They deserve recognition.
This post is sponsored by the ARDA.
This series will cover:
- Women who have made a difference in history ~ inventors, writers, pioneers, women of faith, and more.
- Resource lists and project ideas for further study.
- Positive role models for girls.
I realize that not all influential women in history were Christians. I do believe that many did have faith, which enabled them to fight for their God-given rights with confidence and hope.
Free Teaching Resources
One of the resources I’m using now is the ARDA (Association of Religion Data Archives) to research the connections between American History and religion. It offers a wealth of free Teaching Tools online, including:
- Interactive historical timeline
- Lesson plans
- Religion dictionary
- Investigate Your World critical thinking modules for junior/senior high students
I was able to find several biographical entries for my series in the interactive timeline section of the website.
Elizabeth Cady Stanton:
Flannery O’Connor:
My oldest daughter (8th grade) has helped with the research as we’ve learned to use the ARDA free resources together.
You can follow the ARDA on Facebook and Twitter.
Daughters of Destiny
Raising three daughters makes me even more aware of the issues of inequality that have bothered me since I was old enough to recognize them. I can’t escape the fact women aren’t valued in this world. I want to do what I can to encourage my daughters so that they know their voices are worthy of being heard and that their lives matter.
. . . And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this? Esther 4:14
We each have a destiny within God’s plan. We shouldn’t allow man-made sexism to silence the voices of women. Learning from history is essential to making progress today.
