Charlotte Mason Curriculum: Nature Study
When it comes to Charlotte Mason curriculum, nature study is generally a central focus. There are many Charlotte Mason-inspired curriculum choices available, but one of our absolute favorites is the literature-based Beautiful Feet Books.
Literature-Based Learning
Homeschooling gives us the chance to not only educate our children through academic studies, but it also allows us the opportunity to build relationships and make lasting memories together.
Some of the best memories my daughters and I have together over the past 15+ years of homeschooling are the simplest things. We often say things like:
- Remember that nature walk last spring when we found the robin’s nest with the eggs in it?
- Remember the time the power went out and we had a “drop everything and read” day by candlelight?
- Remember when you were trying to read aloud “Charlotte’s Web” to us and you couldn’t get through it without crying?
- Remember when we read “Pippi Longstocking” together and we all laughed so hard?
So many great memories – and so many of them involve great books!
That’s why we love using Beautiful Feet Books in our homeschool!
Beautiful Feet Books shares our philosophy of Charlotte Mason-inspired learning with living books. No dry textbooks, but real, quality literature! This is hands-down our favorite way to learn.
Seasons Afield Nature Study Curriculum for K-4th
We were so excited to hear about Beautiful Feet Books’ latest addition to their curriculum choices: Seasons Afield Nature Study. My daughters and I couldn’t wait to see it and put it to use.
The books included in the Seasons Afield package are truly gorgeous! I mean swoon-worthy. Those aren’t words I usually use about homeschool curriculum, but they are accurate for this! Beautiful Feet Books did an excellent job selecting books for this study.
Using field guides and picture books, children learn all about the natural world around them. Observation is a key component of this study. Watching the seasons change, collecting nature samples, creating a watercolor nature journal, and more activities that encourage curiosity, creativity, and wonder.
Seasons Afield covers biology, chemistry, botany, ecology, zoology, earth science, field science, watercolor art, handicrafts, music, and even art history. That’s a lot packed into one primary grades nature study curriculum. It’s all done in such a lovely and gentle way so it doesn’t feel overwhelming.
The Teacher’s Guide is also impressive, providing everything you need to open and go with this curriculum. There are ideas for nature walks, arts and crafts, and discussion questions about the books. It even has a suggested schedule to use this year-long nature study. As always, you can tweak as necessary.
This natural science curriculum meets the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for primary grades. It is thorough while maintaining its beauty and enchantment.
Admittedly, we are beyond the target age range for this curriculum. However, beautiful picture books and stories can be enjoyed be all ages! I’m a firm believer in adjusting resources to work for multiple ages and we have been able to do this with Seasons Afield.
As Charlotte Mason-influenced, delight-directed homeschoolers, we appreciate this approach to learning very much.
