Abolition History Crafts for Kids
Abolition history is important for kids to learn! These fun and easy Abolition history crafts for kids will help kids learn about freedom from slavery.
Kids are such concrete thinkers. One way we can help them learn about abstract concepts, like the past, is through hands-on activities and crafts alongside great literature, narrative nonfiction, and biographies. When my kids and I studied Egypt, we read fabulous books about the Exodus, Egypt, and the Pharaohs. We also explored Egypt through a variety of activities that helped our kids learn. We:
- made paper mache death masks and painted them (we formed them on the kids’ faces!)
- built and painted a pyramid from styrofoam project bricks
- created a booklet with the Ten Commandments
- made a salt dough map of Egypt
We had a lot of fun and my kids will always remember what they learned about ancient Egypt and the Exodus.
Abolition History Crafts for Kids
Hands-on learning is also a great way to teach our kids about history. Abolition (1688-1888 AD) was a movement that affected the history of the entire world, as people fought to end the kidnapping, enslavement, and sale of human beings. Abolition also affected Christian history. Most abolitionists were Christians, motivated by truth from God’s Word, and their work to teach the Bible changed the Church. Our kids need to know about the brave men and women who fought for the truth of God’s Word at great risk to their own well-being. Your kids can learn about Abolition through books like Who Were the Abolitionists?, What Was the Underground Railroad?, and Why Did Slavery End?. They can also do fun, hands-on projects that will help them better visualize and understand Abolition history.
Check out these Abolition history crafts for your kids:
- The Abolitionists for Kids | Toilet Paper Craft – Kids can make representations of ten well-known British and American Christian abolitionists.
- Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad | History Craft – The Underground Railroad helped force the events that led to the American Civil War. By the end of the conflict, some four million Americans were freed.
- Love Your Neighbor as Yourself | Bible Verse Craft -Throughout history, God’s people have followed “The Great Commandment” that Jesus laid out in Mark 12:30-32. Put simply, this two part command instructs us to love God and love others. We are to love our neighbors as ourselves. It is a command abolitionists took seriously.
- Acts 17:26 | Handprint Wreath Craft – To support chattel slavery, people invented lies about ethnicity and race. Abolitionists, on the other hand, sought truth in the Bible. Armed with God’s Word, they chose to spend their lives fighting for freedom for all people.
Your kids can learn about the history of the Christian Church through fun books and great hands-on crafts. These resources should get you started on Abolition history!
