Geography Games and Activities for Hands-on Learning
Geography games, printables, and fun activities are a great way to learn! Try these hands-on engaging ideas to add some interest to your geography studies. We’ve used these resources in our homeschool so we know firsthand that geography does not have to be boring!
Creative, hands-on, and multisensory lessons are bywords in our homeschool. When we’re not learning with living books and delight-directed homeschooling, we’re making creative “messes” with hands-on experiments and projects. People don’t generally think of geography as an exciting topic, but it can be made more memorable by using creative games and activities to help kids learn. For instance, have you ever thought about playing a fun geography board game? Trust me, it makes geography at least 20% cooler when you do.

Geography Games and Activities
I’ve written about using lapbooks for your geography studies, which is a great way to make things hands-on and more creative for your kids. You can study any state or country by making a lapbook!
Now I want to share about the fun geography games and learning activities we’re using in our homeschool.

U.S.A. State by State Geography from The Crafty Classroom
This fun downloadable ready-to-print activity notebook has a page on each state that features the state bird, flower, flag, and a place to record some interesting facts about the state. If you enjoy notebooking and/or lapbooking, this is a great addition to your geography studies.
This pack also includes State Bingo, a geography roll-a-state printable board game, and state-shaped mazes.

Passport to Culture
Another fun board game that we own is Passport to Culture. We received it as a Christmas gift two years ago. This game is for players 10 and up, so it would work well for your middle school and high school students. It has trivia questions about different countries regarding the people, places, food, customs, traditions, and more.
Flags of the World
This board game will test your knowledge of Flags of the World! Think you can tell the difference between Mexico, Ireland, and Italy flags? Wait till you see them all like this! Includes a map of the world and playing cards with interesting facts about each country.
The Little Man in the Map
We received this book to review several years ago and each of my girls have enjoyed reading it and learning the states by recognizing the “little man in the map.” MIM is the Little Man in the Map made up of 5 states — Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, and Louisiana. He walks the students in the book through the whole country in rhyming verses, divided up into regional areas to make memorization easier and more interesting. Colorful board book for preschool through elementary.
Stack the States and Stack the Countries
My girls have enjoyed using these apps on the Kindle Fire. As you answer multiple choice and true/false questions about the states or countries, you collect them to “stack” up in a tower. There are real photos of landmarks, maps, and interactive flash cards, too.
Is a U.S. State Study in the plans for your homeschool soon? I have the perfect course for you! Gena Mayo’s newest course from Learn.MusicinOurHomeschool is called “State Songs of the 50 U.S. States.” Now, you can learn about the dates of statehood, abbreviations, state birds, AND the official state songs!
Videos are included so you can hear what the songs sound like, but sheet music is also included in case you’d like to play or sing the songs.
One of the best parts is that each state’s lesson has some fun “unofficial” songs as well, ones that will really help you get a feel for each state as you study it.
All of Gena’s courses are lifetime access, so you can get it now and use it whenever you study U.S. geography.

Little Passports Geography
This has remained one of our favorites through the years. Little Passports offers both World and U.S. geography options. You can get a new lesson and activity delivered straight to your door every month. My girls have always looked forward to getting that box in the mail!

These are some of the ways we’ve made geography fun and memorable in our homeschool.
